Inference of Allelopathy about Spartina Alterniflora to Scirpus Mariqueter by Effects of Activated Carbon on Soil

    Get PDF
AbstractSpartina alterniflora Loisel is an invasive species in Jiuduansha Islands and threatens the survival of native species Scirpus mariqueter. In this study, activated carbon (AC) was applied to study the allelochemicals remained in the soil. Seed germination and seedling growth bioassays were used to test the allelopathic effect, and GC-MS was used to identify the allelochemicals. Our results showed: due to the invasion of S. alterniflora, germination of S. mariqueter seeds and the growth of seedlings were significantly inhibited. When AC was added into S. mariqueter soil, the germination had not been affected while the seedling growth was promoted significantly. When AC was added into the soil of S. alterniflora, both the germination and the seedling growth had an obvious improvement. All indicated that S. alterniflora soil contained allelochemicals which would be absorbed by AC. The identified allelochemicals were hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, dibutyl phthalate, (adipic acid, isohexyl methyl ester) and (adipic acid, di (oct-4-yl ester))

Sample entropy analysis of EEG signals via artificial neural networks to model patients' consciousness level based on anesthesiologists experience.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, as it can express the human brain's activities and reflect awareness, have been widely used in many research and medical equipment to build a noninvasive monitoring index to the depth of anesthesia (DOA). Bispectral (BIS) index monitor is one of the famous and important indicators for anesthesiologists primarily using EEG signals when assessing the DOA. In this study, an attempt is made to build a new indicator using EEG signals to provide a more valuable reference to the DOA for clinical researchers. The EEG signals are collected from patients under anesthetic surgery which are filtered using multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) method and analyzed using sample entropy (SampEn) analysis. The calculated signals from SampEn are utilized to train an artificial neural network (ANN) model through using expert assessment of consciousness level (EACL) which is assessed by experienced anesthesiologists as the target to train, validate, and test the ANN. The results that are achieved using the proposed system are compared to BIS index. The proposed system results show that it is not only having similar characteristic to BIS index but also more close to experienced anesthesiologists which illustrates the consciousness level and reflects the DOA successfully. This research is supported by the Center forDynamical Biomarkers and Translational Medicine, National Central University, Taiwan, which is sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology (Grant no. Get PDF
The electrical properties of Fe-doped semi-insulating (SI) InP were investigated before and after annealing. The annealing conditions were controlled by changing either the temperature or duration. Correlation between the change of electrical parameters with the change of defect concentration at different annealing stage was observed. The defects and the change of the concentrations in Fe-doped SI InP were detected by room-temperature photocurrent spectroscopy.published_or_final_versio

Phylogenetic analysis of planarian collagens and their roles in regeneration

Poster Presentation - Theme 3: Development & stem cellsStem cells are regulated by the microenvironment or niche they reside in, which consists of growth factors, niche cells and the extracellular matrix. The ECM acts as both a structural component and as a reservoir for growth factors that are released upon degradation. During regeneration, stem cells in the planarian are activated to migrate and proliferate; however, the role of the ECM in stem cell regulation is still unclear. Analysis of an EST library of planarian transcripts revealed nine fibrillar-related collagen chains (DjCol1-9). Sequence and structural analysis ...postprin

Location-Based Services (LBS) have been prosperous owing to technological advancements of smart devices. Analyzing location-based user-generated data is a helpful way to under-stand human mobility patterns, further fueling applications such as recommender systems and urban computing. This dataset documents user activities of location-based services through LBSLab, a smartphone-based system implemented as a mini-program in the WeChat app. The dataset contains ac-tivity data of multiple types including logins, profile view-ing, weather checking, and check-ins with location informa-tion (latitude and longitude), POI and mood indicated, col-lected from 467 users over a period of 11 days. We also present some temporal and spatial data analysis and believe the reuse of the data will allow researchers to better under-stand user behaviors of LBS, human mobility, and also tem-poral and spatial characteristics of people's moods. Tai Chi for Chronic Pain Conditions: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Several studies reported that Tai Chi showed potential effects for chronic pain, but its role remains controversial. This review assessed the evidence regarding the effects of Tai Chi for chronic pain conditions. 18 randomized controlled trials were included in our review. The aggregated results have indicated that Tai Chi showed positive evidence on immediate relief of chronic pain from osteoarthritis (standardized mean difference [SMD],-0.54; 95% confidence intervals [CI],-0.77 to-0.30; P < 0.05). The valid duration of Tai Chi practice for osteoarthritis may be more than 5 weeks. And there were some beneficial evidences regarding the effects of Tai Chi on immediate relief of chronic pain from low back pain (SMD,-0.81; 95% CI,-1.11 to-0.52; P < 0.05) and osteoporosis (SMD,-0.83; 95% CI,-1.37 to-0.28; P = 0.003). Therefore, clinicians may consider Tai Chi as a viable complementary and alternative medicine for chronic pain conditions

In this article, a novel formula of nutrient salt for alcohol vinegar production was derived based on mass conservation theory of carbon source, nitrogen source and inorganic ions. Series of semicontinuous fermentations were successfully carried out in a Frings 10 L fermentation tank. The average acetification rate of semi-continuous fermentation was 2 g acetic acid/L*h within about 12 h, average stoichiometric yield was 94%, and then fed-batch trial for high concentration vinegar fermentation was successfully conducted. Both of these confirmed that this method applied was cost-effective. If this method is adopted in industry scale, vinegar manufacturers will reduce production cost significantly.Key words: Formula, alcohol vinegar, fermentation nutrient

Electrical and FT-IR measurements of undoped N-type INP materials grown from various stoichiometric melts

    Get PDF
P-rich, In-rich and Stoichiometric undoped InP melts have been synthesed by phosphorus in-situ injection method. InP crystal ingots have been grown from these melts by Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski (LEC). Samples from these ingots grown from various Stoichiometric melts have been characterized by Hall Effect and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy measurements respectively. The Hall Effect measurement results indicate that the net carrier concentration of P-inch undoped InP is higher than that of In-rich and Stoichiometric undoped InP materials. FT-IR spectroscopy measurements reveal that there are intensive absorption peaks which have been proved to be hydrogen related indium vacancy complex V InH 4. By comparing FT-IR spectra, it is found that P-rich InP material has the most intensive absorption peak of V InH 4, while In-rich InP material has the weakest absorption peak.published_or_final_versio

Stain Consistency Learning: Handling Stain Variation for Automatic Digital Pathology Segmentation

Stain variation is a unique challenge associated with automated analysis of digital pathology. Numerous methods have been developed to improve the robustness of machine learning methods to stain variation, but comparative studies have demonstrated limited benefits to performance. Moreover, methods to handle stain variation were largely developed for H&E stained data, with evaluation generally limited to classification tasks. Here we propose Stain Consistency Learning, a novel framework combining stain-specific augmentation with a stain consistency loss function to learn stain colour invariant features. We perform the first, extensive comparison of methods to handle stain variation for segmentation tasks, comparing ten methods on Masson's trichrome and H&E stained cell and nuclei datasets, respectively. We observed that stain normalisation methods resulted in equivalent or worse performance, while stain augmentation or stain adversarial methods demonstrated improved performance, with the best performance consistently achieved by our proposed approach.
